No one should have to worry about sustaining an injury caused by the careless or negligent actions of an impaired driver on Dallas roadways. Unfortunately, DUI accidents are incredibly common in and around our area. At the Law Office of Julie Johnson, our attorneys regularly help clients who have been injured due to the negligent actions of an impaired driver. Recently, a driver was charged with manslaughter after causing two deaths in a Dallas County car accident.
This Was A Tragic And Preventable Crash
Two passengers in a truck lost their lives in a crash in late June that occurred on a US 80 service road in Dallas County. According to information released from the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department, the suspect in this incident was impaired by alcohol and speeding at the time the crash occurred. Investigators say that a truck driven by an impaired driver struck another vehicle from behind. This led to both vehicles losing control on the service road.
The two people who lost their lives were passengers inside of the impaired driver’s vehicle. They were taken to the hospital but later succumbed to their injuries. The driver of the vehicle struck by the impaired driver also suffered from severe injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
Data from the Texas Department of Transportation shows that there were 886 people killed in vehicle crashes caused by impaired driving during the latest reporting year. This number accounted for 25% of all fatal motor vehicle crashes that year. The Texas DOT also shows that 75 of the alcohol-related fatalities occurred in Dallas County. During the latest year of data on record, there were well over 2,000 total crashes caused by impaired drivers in Dallas County.
Unfortunately, accidents caused by drunk driving tend to be much more severe than other crashes. This is often due to impaired drivers operating at a high rate of speed and regularly failing to brake before a collision occurs. It is not uncommon for victims of DUI crashes to sustain the following injuries:
- Broken and dislocated bones
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Spinal cord injuries
- Internal organ damage
- Internal bleeding
- Severe lacerations
- Amputation injuries
- Crush injuries
- and more
