Earlier this month, we learned that a man died at a Dallas construction site after he became pinned between two pieces of construction equipment. Dallas police officials say that the man was 52 years old and it was moving a Ditch Witch in the alley of 1200 Lakeland Drive.
Officials say that there was a second driver operating a cherry picker in the same alley, but that the second driver’s vision was restricted due to the arm of the cherry picker being in a downward position. This caused the cherry picker to collide with the Ditch Witch, which pinned the first man between the two vehicles.
The 52-year-old construction worker was taken to the hospital but died soon after.
Most people understand that construction workers face more risks than workers in other industries. Out of the 4,779 workers who were killed in private industries during the latest reporting year in the US, 21.1% of those fatalities happened in the construction industry. Construction workers accounted for one in every five worker deaths in 2018.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) labels the leading causes of construction worker deaths the “Fatal Four,” which are as follows:
OSHA says that eliminating the Fatal Four would save nearly 600 workers’ lives each year in this country. However, we know that fatalities are only part of the overall picture. Many thousands more are seriously injured while working in construction jobs each year in this country. Victims of construction accidents are often left with tremendous medical bills and long recovery times, and they sometimes are not able to return to work.
